First week with dentures

Congratulations on your new dentures! You just made a life-changing decision! However, all good things come with patience. In this case, you may have to go through an adjustment period. Here’s what to expect from your new dentures, along with some tips.

New dentures

Dentures are artificial replacements for your missing teeth. You’re going to need to adapt to the feel of them. It may take a few weeks to get completely comfortable with dentures but it’s worth the wait.

Whether you choose upper, lower, partial or full dentures, you’re going through an adjustment period before your new teeth feel natural to you. At first, you’re likely finding it a bit difficult to eat and talk as normally. It’s typical because your gums, tongue and mouth are not used to this new sensation and it will take time. In some cases you may even experience sore spots, gum irritation, excess saliva and changes to your speech. As long as it’s all minor, you have nothing to worry about. However, if the pain gets more intense, please see your denture specialist immediately to have it checked.

Eating

One of the greatest challenges with new teeth is to learn how to bite and chew. The key is to choose food that’s soft but nutritious. Soft food, and food cut into smaller pieces will prevent you putting unnecessary pressure on your dentures and gums. You probably have to avoid some food you love but you’ll figure it out along the way. Good choices here are soups and purees, eggs, pasta, yoghurt and smoothies. In addition, we recommend steaming and boiling your vegetables and other food so it’s easier to bite through.

First week with dentures can be challenging but there are many ways to make the transition easier. For instance, cold food will sooth your sore gums. If that’s not a great excuse to eat your favourite ice cream and icy poles then what is? Additionally, make sure you stay away from spicy, crunchy and sticky food like caramel and honey. Also, some patients have mentioned difficulty sensing the heat level with dentures. To avoid burns, let your food cool down and test the food temperature with your lips before taking a bite.

Speaking

First week with dentures comes with many minor changes. You may have to adjust how you speak. Start by talking slowly, you’ll gradually build up the strength and familiarity to speak as you normally do. If you notice that you lisp while you speak then grab one of your favourite books and read it aloud. Do it in front of a mirror to reassure yourself you still speak naturally. Practice makes you perfect and it will become easier over time.

Loose feeling with dentures

If your teeth were removed on the same day your immediate dentures were inserted, you may feel dentures loosening a bit during the first few weeks. It’s because your gums and bones are healing and with that, also shrinking. This is normal and your denture specialist may give you a temporary liner for a better fit. Most importantly, be patient and reposition the dentures carefully if they are out of place.

In conclusion, the first week with dentures feels different for everybody. Some patients feel mild discomfort, some feel perfectly comfortable right away.
