Are Dentures Covered By Medicare Or Private Health Insurance?

Getting a set of dentures fitted can be a life-changing moment that allows you to enjoy the freedom and hassle-free life that your original teeth afforded you, but how much do dentures cost? How will you pay for them? You’d think it would be as simple as asking if dentures are covered by Medicare or private insurance, but the reality is complicated and depends on your circumstances. Let’s try and unravel the confusion and let you know what you need to do!

is the cost of dentures and denture repair covered by medicare?

How much do dentures cost?

The work required to properly assess, fit and carry out associated medical work to ensure the greatest comfort for the wearer can be quite extensive. The cost of dentures is typically in the range of $2000 – $4000. This depends on the size and complexity of the dentures themselves, as well as the material they’re made from.

How does Medicare work?

In Australia, the primary provider of funding for medical procedures is Medicare. A publicly funded single-payer insurer that pays for many medical treatments, so you’re not left out of pocket. Many Australians also pay for private medical insurance on top of this coverage in order to access services that Medicare doesn’t cover. Such as cosmetic treatments that aren’t considered to be medical in nature.

In the case of dentures, Medicare used to cover some of the preparatory activity to fit dentures. However, Medicare no longer pay for any denture work today. This means, the cost of dentures are not covered by Medicare. Tip: The only way you can get free dentures is if you go to Queensland Health for an assessment.

Will private insurance cover the cost of dentures?

As you can see, dentures can be a costly investment. Additionally, you won’t receive help from Medicare to pay for them, which is why many Australians also have private insurance. It’s normal for Australians to have private dental insurance to cover the cost of all non-medical procedures, but even here there is complexity. Some insurance policies cover only minor dental work, such as check-ups and cleaning. Major work such as cosmetic dentistry and dentures must be paid for out of pocket. It’s always a good idea to make sure you’re completely aware of what your policy covers so that you have an idea of what you have to pay for and what you don’t.
