5 Tips to Eat And Deal With Partial Dentures

If you’ve still got some teeth in your upper or lower jaw, but not enough to bite and chew effectively: a set of false teeth with partial denture could be the solution. Similar to a full denture, but with fewer false teeth attached to the denture: the denture is worn alongside remaining teeth. In the long-term, partial dentures can make it much easier to chew and eat a variety of food. As well as help to maintain facial shape. That said, like any other form of dental intervention, such as braces or full dentures, partial dentures may take a little getting used to. Take a look at our top five tips for dealing with false teeth. It will help make your partial denture wearing experience as straight-forward and comfortable as possible.

Take Your Time with false teeth

Eating with false teeth in position is definitely a challenge, at least initially. In time, the majority of people do get used to their partial dentures. And therefore, enjoy the cosmetic and functional benefits that they bring.

In the short-term, it’s important to wear the denture for a short time at first. Then gradually increase the amount of time you wear it. We recommend taking the denture out at night, in order to give your mouth a break.

Pick Your Foods

During the first weeks of wearing a partial denture, it’s normally wisest to stick to soft, non-sticky foods that are easy to bite, chew and swallow. Your gums take a while to adjust to the dentures. And it also takes some time to learn to chew effectively. Especially, when you can’t feel the food between your false teeth in the same way as you can with your natural teeth.

In time most people can eat a varied diet, although exceptionally tough, chewy foods (steak, for example), sticky foods (toffee or peanut butter), or crunchy foods (popcorn or nuts) may still pose a challenge and be best avoided.

Pay Attention to Dental Hygiene of false teeth

Clean teeth, mouth and gums are always a priority, but even more so when you wear a partial denture. It’s easy for plaque to lodge on the denture, around the sides or under the denture whilst it’s in use. In addition to regular brushing and flossing, we recommend thoroughly cleaning the denture overnight (soaking it in a suitable cleaning agent is good). As well as rinsing the mouth thoroughly if the denture is kept in between meals.

Watch Your Bite

If you have false front teeth, we suggest biting with side teeth. Apples, carrots and other crunchy foodstuffs can simply be too tough for a denture to manage. For people who like crunchy foods, cutting them into small, bite-sized chunks before consumption can work well.

Pay Attention to Soreness

False teeth may be a little uncomfortable when first fitted. But if soreness persists, they may need modification. Your denture specialist is best placed to advise on whether an adjustment to your partial denture is required.
