How To Clean And Care For Your Dentures

Once you have been fitted with your new dentures it’s important that you know how to care for them properly. Removing dentures at night, cleaning and caring for them will ensure their longevity and maintain their appearance. It will also help reduce the risks of pain or inflammation from wearing dentures. Here is a quick guide to help you get the most from your new dentures.

1. Growing accustomed

It may take some time for your mouth to adjust to your new dentures. Start eating gently, taking small bites of relatively soft foods and chewing slowly.

2. Insertion and removal

Always insert and remove your dentures using the correct technique as explained and demonstrated at your dental clinic. Avoid using force as this may damage or break your dentures.

3. Cleaning your dentures

We recommend thoroughly cleaning your dentures at least twice a day and preferably after every meal. They should be removed from your mouth for cleaning. Place a towel or face washer beneath where you are cleaning them, so they won’t break if you accidentally drop them. If you prefer, you can clean them over a half-filled basin of water, once again to prevent breakage.

Dentures should be cleaned using a soft toothbrush or denture brush to remove any food scraps and prevent bacterial build-up. Denture cleaning paste or mild soap and cold water can be used for cleaning. Only use denture cleaning products when your denture has been removed from your mouth and never use hot water when cleaning your dentures.

While your dentures are removed, brush your gums, tongue and the roof of your mouth. This helps improve circulation and removes plaque.

Remove dentures at night and leave them soaking in a glass of cold water.

4. Denture adhesive

If you use adhesive to keep your dentures in place, it is important to clean all traces of the adhesive from your dentures and mouth at the end of the day.

5. Soaking

Soak your dentures every day in a cool denture-cleansing solution. Never use hot or boiling water as this can warp your dentures. Soaking will help break down any remaining plaque. It also has a mild disinfectant effect which will prevent odours from bacterial build-up. There are several denture cleansing products available at pharmacies and supermarkets. Follow the guidelines for use provided with your choice of product. Denture cleansing products should not be used inside your mouth.

6. Remove dentures at night

Remove your dentures at night and either leave them in a glass of cold water or leave them to dry after cleaning/cleansing. This gives your mouth a chance to rest and reduces the risk of gum inflammation sometimes associated with wearing dentures.

7. Regular check-ups

It’s recommended that you schedule regular check-ups with your dental clinic. Every six to twelve months is a guideline, although your dental professional may recommend a different timeline. You can also schedule an appointment to have your dentures repolished if they have become stained or have a build-up of tartar despite regular cleaning.
